2006 Spring Calendar for meetings and field trips

Details for the events listed below may change and new field trips may be added. Please check the list shortly before each event, especially the field trips.

Unless otherwise noted, all regular meetings will be held at 7:00 p.m. in Room 201 in the State College Borough Building on South Allen Sreet, State College, PA.

January 21, 2006 (Saturday)
** Field Trip: Visit Shaver's Creek feeders and woods. Then search for open country raptors and field birds in Big Valley.
7:30 to early afternoon
Meet the Omega Bank at the Westerly Parkway shopping center by 7:30 a.m. for carpooling over to the Shaver's Creek entrance road at 8:00 a.m.

January 25, 2006 (Wednesday)

February 5, 2006 (Sunday)
** Field Trip: Open country birds in Centre County (The infamous annual "Manure Chase")
8:00 a.m. to around noon
Meet at the Omega Bank at the Westerly Parkway shopping center by 8:00 a.m.

February 22, 2006 (Wednesday)

Program: Our guest speaker will be Wayne Laubscher who will talk on northern owls.

March 22, 2006 (Wednesday)
Regular Meeting
7:00 p.m. State College Municipal Building,
Program: Our guest speaker will be Dan Brauning, who will talk on Peregrine Falcons.

April 9, 2005 (Sunday)
** Field Trip:
Bald Eagle State Park and Curtin Wetland - migrating waterfowl and early spring arrivals
8:00 a.m. - noon
Greg Grove will meet carpoolers in the parking lot near the Omega Bank off Westerly Parkway and depart Westerly Parkway at 7:30 to meet Bob Snyder at the Milesburg MacDonald's on Rt 150 at 8:00 am. First stop is Curtin Wetland, the next stop will be Upper Green's Run boat landing, and then the main park.

April 15, 2006 (Saturday)
** Field Trip: Short birding walk at Toftrees
8:00 - 10:00 a.m. (max)
This begins a series of short birding walks in contrast to the longer and sometimes more distant field trips. The walks will occur in the State College area and will take one to two hours.

For the first short birding walk, meet at the parking lot** at the Toftree's conference center ("Toftrees Resort & Four Star Golf Club") on Toftrees Avenue. We will walk down through the fields to the pond and out around to the "back side" of the pond - towards the Game Lands. Total walking distance - maybe one mile. Anyone who has to leave can do so whenever necessary.
(** The side closest to the fields and pond, away from the conference center building).

Program: Our guest speaker will be Andy Wilson, a graduate student at Penn State, who will talk on Agroecosystems and birds.

Short birding walk at Millbrook Marsh

Meet at the Millbrook parking lot at the nature Center 8:00 am Saturday morning.
