The North American Migration Count (NAMC), held every May, ascertains numbers of spring avian migrants across the continent.

Birders on the Huntingdon County NAMC usually find a good mix of species with relatively high numbers of some forest species. This year was the same; I would term it an average year with more than the usual numbers of shorebirds, few as they were. The new species for the count were Ring-necked Duck, Semipalmated, Least, and Pectoral Sandpipers, Caspian Tern, and American Pipit. After two consecutive years with the migration being later than normal, we observed a "normal" number of most common species, with exceptions being few Pewees and Acadian Flycatchers. A week later I heard numerous individuals of each species, so our NAMC result may be partially related to the count being the earliest possible day for the second Saturday in May, the 8th. Following are the 1999 counts from 7 parties with the numbers from previous years shown for comparison. Thanks to all who participated.
