The 60th State College, PA Christmas Bird Count held on December 20, 1998 recorded 67 species and 13,250 individuals. Best species included MUTE SWAN (6th count), AMERICAN WIGEON (6th count), HOODED MERGANSER (2nd count), and SAVANNAH SPARROW (3rd count). New high totals for the count were established for the following species: GREAT BLUE HERON, AM. WIGEON, MOURNING DOVE, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, RUBY-CR. KINGLET, AM. ROBIN, CEDAR WAXWING, and AM. TREE SPARROW. Two new count week species for the SC CBC were added by David Brandes, who tallied 7 BALD EAGLES and 15 GOLDEN EAGLES on Bald Eagle Mtn. during count week.
